Algeria and Mali restore diplomatic ties to combat Sahel terrorism

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga have reaffirmed their commitment to making the Sahel region free from terrorism and a “haven of peace.” The meeting in Algiers marks a significant step in normalizing relations between the two nations following a year-long diplomatic crisis that saw the withdrawal of ambassadors.

Beyond political mediation, the rapprochement signals a shift in Algerian strategy toward economic diplomacy. This new approach focuses on infrastructure, energy, and trade projects to create regional interdependencies. The cooperation aims to include other Sahelian nations, such as Niger and Burkina Faso, within the framework of the Alliance of Sahel States.

During the discussions, President Tebboune emphasized that Algeria would respect Mali’s sovereignty and refrain from interfering in its internal affairs. Malian officials noted that the shared geography and history between the two countries necessitate close cooperation to ensure stability and development for their respective populations.
