Algeria-Mali diplomatic rapprochement
Overview
Algeria and Mali have begun normalizing diplomatic relations following a year-long crisis characterized by the withdrawal of ambassadors. In late August 2026, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga met in Algiers to reaffirm a commitment to making the Sahel a “haven of peace” through counter-terrorism efforts and economic diplomacy involving infrastructure and energy projects.
On September 9 and 10, 2026, the two nations resumed high-level diplomatic and technical cooperation through the 13th session of the Grande Commission mixte in Bamako. This meeting marks a significant step in normalizing relations, revitalizing a cooperation framework that had remained inactive since 2016.
The thaw in relations follows the August 24 working visit to Algiers by Prime Minister Maïga, which helped address disagreements stemming from Mali’s repudiation of the 2015 peace agreement and a 2025 border incident involving a Malian drone. The commission, established in 1973, serves as an institutional mechanism to manage bilateral agreements in critical sectors such as energy, trans-Saharan transport, trade, security intelligence, and professional training. The renewed dialogue aims to address shared challenges regarding cross-border security and economic development along their 1,300-kilometer border.
