African nations expand digital connectivity via new fiber optic links
Several West and North African nations are advancing major digital and infrastructure integration projects. Algeria and Niger have officially launched the operation of a trans-Saharan fiber optic backbone. Connecting In-Guezzam in Algeria to the Arlit-Agadez region in Niger, the link provides an initial capacity of 100 gigabits per second. This project, implemented by Algeria Telecom and Niger Telecom, is part of a broader trans-Saharan initiative involving Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, and Chad.
Simultaneously, Senegal and Mali have inaugurated the interconnection of their national fiber optic networks at the Kidira border crossing. Managed by Senegal Numérique SA and the Société malienne de transmission et de diffusion, this link aims to secure telecommunications and improve internet quality for both populations.
In the media sector, the Confederation of Sahel States (AES)—comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—has launched Tafouk TV. Based in Bamako, the station is designed to strengthen the region's informational sovereignty and promote Sahelian cultures and languages.
In Senegal, the government is accelerating the Dakar–Tambacounda railway project, a key component of the 'Sénégal 2050' national transformation agenda, through increased ministerial coordination.
