Algeria begins construction on Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline
Algeria has begun construction on its segment of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), a project designed to transport Nigerian gas reserves through Niger to North Africa. The 4,128-kilometer pipeline is a collaborative effort involving Algeria’s state-owned Sonatrach, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and the Niger Petroleum Products Company (Sonidep).
The pipeline aims to connect to existing networks near Aoulef in southwestern Algeria, eventually reaching Mediterranean export terminals that supply European markets via Italy and Spain. This development comes as Algeria seeks to expand its role as a transit hub, following its 2025 performance where it supplied approximately 40 billion cubic meters of gas to the European Union, representing 14% of total European imports.
