Algeria expands renewable energy capacity with new solar and wind projects

Algeria has commissioned a major 300 MWp solar power plant in El Foula, located in the Guemar commune of El Oued province. The facility began injecting electricity into the national grid this Monday, marking the largest photovoltaic installation in the country since the start of the year. This project surpasses previous installations in Tendla and El Ghrous, which both provided 200 MW.

The solar expansion is part of a national roadmap aiming to reach 15,000 MW of installed solar capacity by 2035. This strategy seeks to diversify the energy mix, utilize high levels of solar radiation in the southeast, and secure long-term energy supplies.

In parallel, the state utility Sonelgaz has launched a national tender for the development of two new wind farms. These projects, located in Djelfa and Laghouat, are planned to have a capacity of 100 MW each. The initiative includes grid connection works and aims to strengthen local expertise by requiring participating companies to be of Algerian law and possess proven experience in the energy sector.
