Algeria expands cancer care with 52 new treatments and increased funding
At the 2nd International Cancer Patient Congress in Algiers, Algerian health authorities announced a major strategic expansion to combat rising cancer rates. Following a 34% increase in cases over the last decade, with over 56,000 new cases recorded in 2023, the government is integrating 52 new innovative treatments into the national pharmacopoeia, specifically prioritizing immunotherapy and targeted therapies.
To support this initiative, the Cancer Fight Fund has reached over 73 billion dinars, with an annual allocation of 40 billion dinars. For 2026, 40 billion dinars are specifically earmarked for oncological treatments to ensure supply continuity and prevent shortages. Infrastructure improvements include the planned addition of 25 new radiotherapy services and 16 linear accelerators by 2028.
Beyond medical treatment, the Ministry of National Solidarity, Family, and Women's Condition emphasized a holistic approach. This includes psychological support, social assistance for families, and the total free provision of medications for uninsured vulnerable individuals and their minor children. The national strategy for 2025-2035 focuses on five pillars: prevention, early screening, diagnosis, patient care pathways, and research and training.
