Algeria implements new regulations for private schools

A new executive decree published in the Official Journal (No. 71) establishes strict operational, pedagogical, and administrative requirements for private educational institutions in Algeria. The regulations, signed on September 22, 2026, mandate that private schools exclusively follow national curricula defined by the Ministry of National Education.

Key provisions include a ban on foreign educational programs and the requirement to use only ministry-approved textbooks and pedagogical materials. The Arabic language must be used for all subjects at all levels, with the exception of foreign language instruction. Additionally, schools are required to announce tuition fees at least three months before the start of the academic year.

To obtain accreditation, founders must be at least 25 years old, hold Algerian nationality, and maintain full civil rights. The decree also requires institutions to subscribe to a bank guarantee and submit a pedagogical performance contract to the relevant education directorate. The granting of licenses will now be subject to the needs defined by the national school map.
