Algeria launches major integrated phosphate mining and fertilizer project
Algeria has officially launched key phases of its Integrated Phosphate Project (PPI) with the groundbreaking of two major industrial sites. On September 24, officials laid the first stone for an extraction and enrichment complex at the Bled El Hadba mine in the Tébessa province. This site sits atop geological resources estimated at approximately 1.2 billion tonnes of raw phosphate.
Simultaneously, construction has begun on a massive chemical transformation complex in Oued El-Kebir, Souk Ahras. This facility is designed to produce 2.4 million tonnes of phosphate fertilizers and 570,000 tonnes of nitrogen-based fertilizers annually. The Italian company Saipem has been contracted to execute the works using an ‘EPC Fast Track’ model to accelerate completion.
The integrated project links the Tébessa mining sites to the Souk Ahras transformation units via a planned railway line leading to the port of Annaba. Once fully operational, the project aims to reach a capacity of 10.5 million tonnes of raw phosphate extraction per year, producing significant quantities of enriched phosphate and concentrates for commercial use and domestic chemical processing.
