Algeria integrated phosphate project development

Algeria is advancing its Integrated Phosphate Project (PPI), a large-scale initiative involving mining and chemical transformation.

In mid-September, the Minister of Hydraulics, Lounès Bouzegza, established a 2026 deadline for completing essential water connection works for the Bled El Hadba and Oued El Keberit sites. The minister emphasized the need for accelerated construction and strict technical adherence to meet the project’s strategic economic goals.

By late September, the project moved into active construction phases with the groundbreaking of two major industrial sites. This includes an extraction and enrichment complex at the Bled El Hadba mine in Tébessa province, which sits over an estimated 1.2 billion tonnes of raw phosphate. Concurrently, construction began on a chemical transformation complex in Oued El-Kebir, Souk Ahras, intended to produce millions of tonnes of phosphate and nitrogen-based fertilizers annually. The Italian firm Saipem is utilizing an ‘EPC Fast Track’ model to expedite the works. The integrated system will eventually link mining sites to transformation units via a planned railway line to the port of Annaba.
