Algeria Launches Sanâa Summer Vocational Training Programme for Youth

Algeria’s Ministry of Vocational Training and Education inaugurated the Sanâa programme, a nationwide summer initiative aimed at equipping young people aged 15‑27 with practical skills in six in‑demand trades such as building painting, electricity, plumbing, welding, refrigeration and air‑conditioning. Registrations opened on 31 May and the 45‑day training cycle begins on 15 June, using the public network of vocational centres across the country.

The government earmarked 125.215 billion dinars (about $945 million) for vocational training in 2026, a 17.46 % rise from the previous year, as youth unemployment hovers around 29 % for the 16‑24 age group. Authorities frame Sanâa as a fast‑track, hands‑on alternative to formal academic routes, with the intention of addressing chronic labour shortages in the construction and technical sectors and fostering micro‑enterprise creation among participants.

The initiative complements broader reforms, including a new national training and skills framework and expanded apprenticeship slots, and follows a record intake of 672 000 trainees in the October 2025 cycle.
