African youth vocational training initiatives
Overview
Since late May 2026 Algeria has rolled out the Sanâa summer programme, a 45‑day construction trade training cycle, and later repurposed under‑used youth entrepreneurship centres in Tébessa. By mid‑June Algerian authorities added 1,366 public‑sector posts for youths in border and southern wilayas. Regional counterparts moved in parallel. Tunisia, through a public‑private partnership with Mazarine Energy and ETAP, equipped health, school and youth centres in Kébili, Sidi Bouzid and Tozeur, while German and French co‑financing of the ELIFE digital‑technology and startup incubation hubs is expected to create more than 1 300 jobs. Senegal relaunched its TerangaSkills competition to link technical trades with the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Later in June Tunisia expanded its vocational catalogue by six specialties, raising capacity to over 25 300 places and reporting a 100 % placement rate for recent trainees; Niger completed a digital‑skills programme for 100 youths. In late June the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education announced a compulsory “Study Skills” course for all licence‑level students starting in the 2026‑27 academic year and increased licence tracks to 1,190, based on 1,904 programme proposals aimed at roughly 85 000 students. Early July the “Savoir Agir” reform was detailed, targeting language, critical‑thinking and soft‑skill gaps. By early July the two‑year Franco‑Tunisian “Savoir Agir” project was formally closed. It equipped about 80 000 students across all licence programmes, trained 1,363 teachers through 19 sessions and 71 workshops, qualified 1 191 licence programmes for implementation in September 2026, and was supported by a €2 million French funding envelope for the 2023‑2026 cooperation period. In mid‑July Ghana’s Digital Centres and the Youth Employment Agency signed an MoU to deliver an eight‑month IT Micro‑Degree Programme, Microsoft‑certified and including 600 paid‑internship placements for 2,000 youths.
