Algeria launches High Council for scientific diaspora

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received members of the High Council of the National Scientific Community Abroad in Algiers. The council, coordinated by Professor Elias Zerhouni, aims to transition from sporadic contact with the diaspora to a permanent institutional partnership to support national development.

The council includes approximately 27 to 30 prominent scientists and experts from various fields, such as biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, and materials science. Key members include Elias Zerhouni, a former director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and Kamal Youcef-Toumi from MIT.

The body is tasked with evaluating major scientific and technological projects, conducting technological monitoring, and providing recommendations directly to the Presidency. The initiative focuses on sectors including artificial intelligence, health, and the knowledge economy to modernize the national economy.
