Algeria legislative election turnout hits record low, signaling political crisis

Algeria held its parliamentary elections on 2 July. Official figures show voter turnout at just 20.8‑21 percent, the lowest participation rate since independence and below the 23 percent recorded in 2021. The turnout drop was especially stark in the Kabylie region, where only about 15 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot, and among younger voters who cite limited economic prospects and little confidence that parliament can affect change.

Analysts interpret the abysmal participation as a deepening crisis for Algeria’s political parties, which they say have failed to mobilise the electorate. Despite measures such as extending voting hours nationwide, the public appears increasingly disengaged, viewing elections as having little impact on policy and opting instead for migration or abstention. The result raises questions about the legitimacy of the National People’s Assembly and the broader stability of the Algerian political system.
