Algeria 2026 election – coalition majority, female speaker

Entities: Assemblée Populaire Nationale · Front de Libération Nationale (FLN) · Algerian diaspora · Leïla Aslaoui · President Abdelmadjid Tebboune

Overview

Algeria’s 2 July 2026 parliamentary election recorded a 21 % turnout, giving the pro‑presidential bloc (FLN 91, RND 74, Future Front 56 seats) an absolute majority well above the 204‑seat threshold after the Constitutional Court validated the result.

The new Assembly Populaire Nationale was sworn in on 28 July, including 12 overseas seats (FLN 5, Front El Moustakbal 2, RND 2, independents 3) with a 10.75 % diaspora turnout. That day FLN deputy Khalida Boufedech was elected president of the Assembly, receiving 302 of 366 votes, defeating Amine Allouche (57) and Rachid Hassani (7). The 44‑year‑old allergology specialist and former head of Algiers’ health directorate became the first woman to preside over the lower house since independence and the third‑highest ranking official in state protocol.

Boufedech’s five‑year mandate will cover the 10th legislature. She succeeds Brahim Boughali and, under the constitution, will appoint three of the nine members of the Constitutional Council and may refer legislation to it before promulgation. Her election, alongside Constitutional Court president Leïla Aslaoui, means two of Algeria’s top institutions are now headed by women. Women remain a minority in parliament, accounting for only 23 of 407 deputies (5.6%).

Analysts continue to question the parliament’s legitimacy given modest voter engagement and enduring challenges such as youth unemployment, economic diversification, and the legacy of the 2019 Hirak movement.
