Algeria president seeks death penalty for arsonists after deadly wildfires

Algeria is facing a massive environmental and human catastrophe as unprecedented wildfires sweep through several provinces, including Sétif, Guelma, and Jijel. The fires have caused widespread destruction of forests, livestock, and homes. While the official death toll from the Interior Ministry stands at 12, independent reports and local accounts suggest the actual number of fatalities may be significantly higher, with some estimates reaching 200.

In response to the crisis, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has called for the reinstatement of the death penalty for arsonists. He has ordered the justice ministry to amend criminal laws by September 15 to include capital punishment for those convicted of intentionally starting fires in forested areas. The president noted that foul play has not been ruled out and has ordered investigations into the intensity of the blazes. Additionally, the government has pledged compensation for affected families and repairs for damaged property.
