Researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research predict that without significant emission reductions, the area ravaged by wildfires in Europe could nearly triple by 2100. In Algeria, the late August fires have triggered a period of national mourning following a decree by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. However, the official death toll has become a subject of intense debate. While initial reports from Interior Minister Said Sayoud cited 12 deaths and 54 injuries, a lack of updated official communication since August 26 has fueled public doubt. Speculation regarding the true scale of the tragedy, sometimes referred to as ‘Black Wednesday’, has been exacerbated by social media footage appearing to show mass burials and the circulation of online disinformation campaigns. In response to the devastation and widespread public anger, President Tebboune has ordered the Minister of Justice to amend the penal code to allow for the execution of individuals convicted of arson. This directive seeks to make the death penalty effective for those found guilty of intentionally starting fires, potentially breaking a 33-year moratorium on executions in Algeria.
