Algeria ramps up legislative election campaign ahead of July 2 vote

With the July 2 legislative elections approaching, Algerian candidates are intensifying their campaigns. Party leaders have held meetings across wilayas, presenting programmes and urging high voter turnout. The RND, FLN, FFS, and other parties staged rallies in Algiers, Batna, Mila, Tizi‑Ouzou and other regions, stressing the need for a strong Assembly.

At the same time, political analysts warn that many campaign promises exceed the constitutional powers of deputies, such as promises of housing, road works, and local development projects, which belong to the executive and local authorities. Constitutional scholar Moussa Boudehane stresses that deputies’ roles are limited to legislation, government oversight, and representing constituents, and calls for realistic pledges aligned with parliamentary authority.
