Algeria identified as prime location for 2027 total solar eclipse
The total solar eclipse scheduled for August 2, 2027, is being hailed as one of the most significant astronomical events of the 21st century. Experts note that the duration of totality could reach up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds, making it one of the longest eclipses this century.
Algeria is highlighted as a premier destination for observers due to its favorable conditions and long periods of darkness. Specific recommended sites include the ancient Roman city of Timgad, where totality is expected to last over 5 minutes, as well as M’Sila and Bou Saâda. Other notable viewing areas include Oran and Mostaganem along the western coast.
The eclipse path will traverse several regions, including southern Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and the Arabian Peninsula. In Egypt, Luxor is noted as a location where the period of darkness will be particularly long. The event is expected to draw significant interest from astronomers and tourists globally, with some experts stating that no other solar eclipse will offer such a long duration of totality before the year 2114.
