2020s total solar eclipses
Overview
The August 2024 total solar eclipse crossed Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and Portugal. This event belonged to Saros series 126, which will produce another notable eclipse on 2 August 2027.
On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse swept across the Northern Hemisphere, including Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, and parts of the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain, the event marked the first total solar eclipse visible in mainland Spain since 1905. In Mallorca, approximately 18,000 spectators gathered at Son Bou beach, prompting local authorities to implement travel prohibitions to manage crowds. In the United Kingdom, the event was the most dramatic seen in nearly three decades, though it was followed by a 650 per cent increase in searches for ‘sore eyes’ amid warnings to use proper ISO 12312-2 solar eclipse glasses.
Looking forward, a significant total solar eclipse is scheduled for 2 August 2027. It is expected to be the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century, with a maximum duration of approximately 6 minutes and 23 seconds. This event establishes a record for the longest duration of solar blockage measured on Earth between 1991 and 2114. The path of totality will cross southern Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East, including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. In Luxor, Egypt, the duration of totality is estimated to reach approximately 6 minutes and 22 seconds. This extraordinary duration is attributed to the Earth being near aphelion while the Moon is near perigee. Observers may witness phenomena such as ‘Baily’s beads’, the ‘Diamond Ring’ effect, and the visibility of the solar corona. A subsequent partial solar eclipse is projected for 26 January 2028.
