Algeria to Lead AU Peace and Security Council from August 2026

Algeria will assume the rotating presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (CPS) on 1 August 2026, under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The country’s agenda for the month focuses on the right to education in conflict zones, progress reviews on the Sahel and South Sudan, and close coordination with the Pan‑African Parliament, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, and the AGA‑APSA platform.

The program also includes an assessment of the AU’s Agenda 2063 initiative ‘Silencing Guns in Africa’, a coordination meeting of the AU Counter‑Terrorism Centre, AFRIPOL, the CISSA intelligence and security committee, and a field mission to Sudan to gauge the political situation and support stabilization efforts.
