Overview

Algeria assumed the rotating presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (CPS) on 1 August 2026, with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Ambassador Mohamed Khaled outlining a six‑month programme centred on a comprehensive security assessment, direct crisis engagement and African‑led solutions. The Council announced an US$8.8 million funding package for 19 member states to sustain education in conflict‑affected areas, emphasizing school protection and the integration of refugee children into national systems.

In September 2026 Benin succeeded Algeria as CPS chair, with Foreign Minister Corinne Amori Brunet meeting AU Commission President Mahmoud Ali Youssouf to set priorities for the 2026‑2028 mandate. The monthly chairmanship continues to steer discussions, organise consultations and spotlight specific conflict‑prevention topics. No further CPS chairmanship changes have been reported as of July 2026.
