Algeria to reintroduce death penalty for arson and child kidnapping
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered a revision of the Penal Code to reintroduce the execution of the death penalty for two specific categories of crimes. These include arsonists whose fires result in deaths and individuals involved in the kidnapping of minors accompanied by torture or violence.
This move aims to end a de facto moratorium on capital punishment that has been in place in Algeria since 1993. The decision follows a series of devastating forest fires in the country's northern and eastern regions, which caused significant loss of life and property. Human rights organizations and political groups, such as the Jil Jadid party, have expressed concern or opposition, questioning the effectiveness of the death penalty and suggesting that governance and forest maintenance are the primary issues.
In addition to the legal reforms, the President has ordered the immediate commencement of compensation payments to victims of the recent fires, with the Ministry of Agriculture tasked with overseeing aid for the livestock sector. The Council of Ministers also addressed preparations for the 2026-2027 school year and the progress of strategic railway infrastructure projects across the country.
