Algeria wildfires spark debate over official death toll

Wildfires ravaging northeastern and eastern Algeria during late August 2026 have led to a period of national mourning and growing uncertainty regarding the official death toll. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decreed three days of national mourning following the fatalities.
