Algerian Election Authority Prepares for July 2 Legislative Vote

Interim president of Algeria's Independent National Election Authority (ANIE), Karim Khelfane, affirmed the agency’s readiness for the legislative elections scheduled for 2 July. He said ANIE will carry out its duties in line with the law to guarantee transparency, integrity and credibility at each stage of the process.

Khelfane explained that the authority’s review of candidate lists follows article 200 of the organic electoral law, aimed at combating illicit financing. Rejected lists can be appealed in court, and the agency stresses that its role is to ensure legal compliance rather than to exclude candidates. The review considered signature counts, representation of youth, women and academics, and fiscal status. Early‑submitted lists were able to correct deficiencies, while those submitted at the deadline had limited opportunity.

Preparations began before the electoral roll was convened, with field visits to newly created wilayas confirming their capacity to run the vote. Coordination with ministries and other institutions is ongoing, including provisions for the diaspora, whose allocated seats have risen from eight to twelve. Khelfane concluded that all indicators point to a well‑organized election both within Algeria and abroad.
