Algeria and Niger strengthen energy ties and gas pipeline cooperation

Algeria and Niger are strengthening their strategic energy partnership following a working visit to Niamey by Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab. A primary focus of the discussions was the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, which aims to connect Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria. Both nations agreed to accelerate the project by launching topographic surveys and environmental and geotechnical studies on Nigerien territory.

Energy cooperation also extends to oil and gas exploration. Sonatrach is currently conducting research in Niger’s Kafra oil block, and both parties discussed potential expansion into the Bilma block. Additionally, the partnership includes technical cooperation in refining, specifically regarding maintenance at the Zinder refinery in Niger.

In separate domestic developments, Niger has restructured its leadership in the agricultural sector, with Colonel Bilaly Elhadj Gambobo succeeding Colonel Mahaman Elhadj Ousmane as Minister of Agriculture and Livestock. Furthermore, the Nigerien state has increased its stake in the Madaouela uranium project to 40% through a new agreement with Madaouela Mining Company (MAMICO), aiming to maximize national economic returns from its natural resources.
