Algeria begins 2026-2027 academic year for 12 million students

Algeria has officially launched the 2026-2027 academic year, with the school year kickoff ceremonies held in Jijel. Approximately 12 million students across primary, middle, and secondary cycles are returning to classrooms nationwide.

To support this academic year, the Ministry of National Education has implemented several structural and pedagogical updates. This includes the recruitment of approximately 64,000 new teachers and the delivery of 289 new educational establishments, such as primary schools, middle schools, and high schools. In the Oran region alone, 455,000 students are returning to school, supported by 20 new facilities and over 1,700 new teachers.

The ministry has also introduced new organizational guidelines for middle schools, specifically regarding weekly teaching hours and subject coefficients for core subjects like Arabic, foreign languages, and mathematics. Additionally, the higher education sector is emphasizing digital transformation, with plans to integrate artificial intelligence into various academic paths and administrative processes, such as university registrations.
