Algerian educational curriculum and school year updates

The Algerian Ministry of National Education has undergone a series of curriculum adjustments. Initially, the Ministry canceled a planned reform of secondary and technical education curricula that had caused controversy regarding subject hours and coefficients. This reversal followed directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to keep schools free from ideology.

Subsequently, the Ministry issued new instructions for the organization of middle school education for the 2026-2027 academic year. These updates provided specific details on weekly teaching hours and subject coefficients across all four levels of the middle school cycle, including adjustments for Arabic, Mathematics, French, and English instruction.

As the 2026-2027 academic year officially launched, approximately 12 million students returned to classrooms nationwide. To support this cycle, the Ministry implemented structural and pedagogical updates, including the recruitment of roughly 64,000 new teachers and the delivery of 289 new educational establishments. In the Oran region, for instance, 455,000 students were supported by 20 new facilities and over 1,700 new teachers. Additionally, the higher education sector has begun emphasizing digital transformation, with plans to integrate artificial intelligence into academic paths and administrative processes.
