Sardinia manages plastic waste crisis and storage emergency

Sardinia is facing a plastic waste emergency caused by a crisis in the recycling supply chain. The industry is struggling to compete with low-priced virgin plastic from China, leading to saturated processing plants and slowed collection rates.

Regional authorities, led by Environment Councilor Rosanna Laconi, have convened technical task forces involving CONAI and COREPLA to find solutions. Immediate measures include identifying new temporary storage areas for approximately 2,400 tons of material and planning transfers of plastic to the mainland and abroad. A new selection center in southern Sardinia is expected to become operational by October to strengthen the local supply chain.

In Alghero, the situation has caused local tension. Residents in the Santa Maria La Palma district reported bad odors and air quality concerns due to temporary plastic storage. Local officials have conducted inspections and announced that the use of the Santa Maria La Palma site as a temporary depot will be suspended to mitigate impact on residents.
