Aliança Catalana surges to become Catalonia’s third force and fields mayoral candidate in Cambrils

On 13 July, Enric Daza, the spokesperson for Junts in the Cambrils town council, announced he will run for mayor under the banner of Aliança Catalana (AC). The move follows a new political poll by the Centre for Opinion Studies (CEO) of the Catalan government that projects AC to leap from two seats to roughly 23‑25 seats, making it the third‑largest party in the Catalan Parliament behind PSC and ERC and pushing Junts down to 16‑18 seats.

The rapid growth is credited to the leadership of Silvia Orriols and is framed around security concerns, with Daza saying his candidacy aims to “recover order” and “strengthen security” in Cambrils. Analysts note that if AC and the far‑right Vox combine, they could together hold more than 28 % of seats and around 27 % of the vote intention, signalling a notable shift toward the right in Catalan politics.

The development highlights a broader realignment in the region, as AC's ascendancy challenges the traditional dominance of pro‑independence parties and raises questions about future coalition dynamics in Catalonia.
