Catalonia 2027 municipal election developments – July 2026
Entities: Silvia Orriols · Vox · Junts · Enric Daza · Aliança Catalana
Overview
In early May 2026 Catalan parties grappled with organisational hurdles ahead of the 2027 municipal elections. The far‑right Aliança Catalana struggled to field candidates in major cities, while the left‑wing CUP debated contesting provincial capitals. The election calendar was confirmed later that month, prompting mayoral turnover: incumbent Marta Farrés sought a third term in Girona and 92 municipalities saw leadership changes. June saw decisive moves. Junts per Catalunya held a primary in Barcelona, electing veteran councillor Jordi Martí as its mayoral candidate and pledging city‑wide pacts with former mayor Xavier Trias. Barcelona’s council announced an intensive summer works programme to expand sidewalks, improve transport links and boost climate‑resilient infrastructure. Aliança withdrew its Figueres mayoral nominee Arnau Liesa after a disclosed personal relationship, naming other candidates such as Marc Villafañe (Girona) and historian Jordi Aragonès (Barcelona). In early July the campaign intensified, with Social‑democratic lead candidate Gerard Alís calling for rebuilding, maintaining most of the programme and seeking a broad left‑wing coalition that excludes the SDP. On 16 July the new independentist party Alhora presented its first municipal list, placing lawyer Maria Vila at the top in Sant Cugat del Vallès and highlighting unaffordable housing, a local referendum on municipal status, and deficiencies in public spaces, nurseries and senior‑care. The anti‑capitalist CUP announced it would not run a list in Terrassa, citing unfavourable conditions and a shift to grassroots activism outside the council. A new poll released in late July projected Aliança Catalana to surge to 23‑25 seats, making it the third‑largest force behind PSC and ERC. On 13 July Junts spokesperson Enric Daza declared his mayoral candidacy in Cambrils under the Aliança banner, with party leader Silvia Orriols emphasizing security and “order” in the town.
