Alicante farmers face water cuts after Supreme Court dismisses Tajo‑Segura appeal

Spain’s Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the Central Union of Irrigators of the Tajo‑Segura Aqueduct (Scrats) against the revision of the Tajo water plan. In response, María Gómez, the People’s Party (PPCV) spokesperson on water matters, denounced the central government’s water policy, saying it delivers “a new blow” to thousands of farmers in Alicante. She warned that the cuts to the Tajo‑Segura transfer jeopardise employment, investment and the long‑term viability of the region’s agricultural sector.

Gómez called for a national water pact based on territorial solidarity, technical rigor and guaranteed water resources for irrigators. She argued that decisions made in Madrid have reduced water availability for irrigation without dialogue with local farming communities, heightening uncertainty and threatening the future of Alicante’s agriculture.
