Alicante groups demand urgent climate shelters as heat deaths rise

Forty‑seven civic groups in Alicante submitted an open letter calling for immediate action against extreme summer heat. They ask the city to expand climate shelters, set up coordinated early‑warning systems, improve public information, and transform homes and neighborhoods into resilient, livable spaces.

The letter notes that this summer’s heatwave caused 127 deaths in the province, a 27 % increase over the previous year, and frames the situation as a public‑health emergency. The groups cite Spain’s Climate Change and Ecological Transition Law 6/2022 and the regional Decree 150/2025, which mandate a network of climate spaces to protect the population from extreme temperatures.

They also remind officials of a similar request made on 27 July 2025, urging the municipal government to adopt a comprehensive climate‑adaptation plan for the city.
