Alicante launches food waste reduction program

Alicante is launching a week-long program of activities designed to teach families how to better utilize food and reduce waste. Organized in observance of International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the initiative will run from September 27 to October 2 through the Centro Educativo de Recursos de Consumo (Cerca).

The program includes workshops, games, visits to Mercalicante, and showcooking sessions. A key focus is the use of ‘ugly fruit’—produce that does not meet standard aesthetic commercial criteria but remains nutritious. Participants will learn how to purchase, preserve, and reuse food more responsibly to maximize the food chain.

Activities include a pancake workshop using imperfect fruit and a trivia game focused on food conservation, expiration dates, and best-before labels. The municipal goal is to foster healthy and sustainable consumption habits among citizens, starting from a young age.
