Alicante waste management and sustainability initiatives

Overview

Alicante has initiated several measures to address food and waste management. The city launched a week-long program through the Centro Educativo de Recursos de Consumo (Cerca) to teach families how to reduce food waste. This initiative includes workshops, showcooking sessions, and activities focused on the use of ‘ugly fruit’ to promote sustainable consumption habits.

In addition to food waste education, the Alicante City Council and Netial updated the ‘Tú Haces Alicante’ mobile application. This update provides a real-time reporting feature that allows residents to notify authorities about cleaning and waste management issues, such as overflowing containers or abandoned furniture, and to request the removal of bulky items.
