Alicante mayor skips housing scandal hearing as city launches new vulnerable housing tender

The Alicante city council has opened a tender to manage 13 temporary housing units for people at risk of social exclusion. The contract, valued at €1,132,680, will run for two years with the possibility of a two‑year extension. Services will include a coordinator, social workers, educators and support staff, offering stays of up to 12 months to help roughly 300 homeless residents reintegrate into society.

Mayor Luis Barcala (PP) announced he will not attend a municipal commission meeting on the Les Naus public‑housing scandal in Playa de San Juan, saying his presence would add nothing and citing an ongoing judicial investigation. The controversy, which led to the resignation of a former urban‑planning councilor and a municipal director, is also being examined by a Valencian parliamentary commission.
