Alicante police enforce new electric scooter regulations
The Local Police in Alicante have launched an enforcement and information campaign regarding new regulations for Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP), specifically electric scooters. Following new DGT guidelines that take full effect on October 1, users face fines ranging from 100 to 500 euros for various infractions.
During an initial inspection at Plaza de España, authorities inspected 30 vehicles and issued approximately 20 citations. The most frequent violation was operating a scooter without DGT registration, followed by failure to wear a helmet and exceeding the 25 km/h speed limit.
Key requirements under the new regulations include: - A minimum age of 15 years to operate the vehicle. - Mandatory use of an approved helmet. - Use of reflective vests or elements during night or low-visibility conditions. - Prohibition of mobile phone or headphone use while driving. - Compliance with technical standards, including functional lights and a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
Professional delivery riders are required to wear helmets and reflective gear at all times. Civil liability insurance has been mandatory since January 2026, and circulation certificates have been required since 2024.
