Alicante police increase electric scooter inspections under new rules
Local police in the Alicante province are increasing surveillance of electric scooters and personal mobility vehicles (PMVs) following updates to Spain’s General Traffic Regulations.
In Torrevieja, a recent overnight operation resulted in 13 penalties and the impounding of two vehicles. Violations included lack of DGT registration, absence of compulsory insurance, riding without helmets or reflective vests, and carrying multiple passengers. Registration failures were the most frequent offense.
In Xàbia, authorities are also conducting checks to ensure compliance with new requirements. Current regulations mandate that riders be at least 15 years old, wear certified helmets, possess third-party liability insurance, and register vehicles with the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT). Prohibited actions include riding on pavements, using mobile phones or headphones while moving, and carrying passengers. Future regulations, set for October 2027, will also require lighting and reflective elements for night-time travel.
