Alice Schwarzer to end feminist magazine ‘Emma’ after 50 years

Alice Schwarzer, Germany’s most prominent feminist, has announced that her magazine ‘Emma’ will cease publication after 50 years. The final issue is scheduled for release on December 8, 2026.

Schwarzer stated that the decision is not driven by financial necessity, noting that while circulation has declined, revenues still cover expenses and financial reserves exist. Instead, she described the decision as a sense of exhaustion, stating, ‘We are going because we feel: It is enough!’

Founded on January 26, 1977, ‘Emma’ was established to provide a female voice as a counterweight to what Schwarzer termed ‘male media.’ Over nearly five decades and 398 issues, the magazine covered controversial topics including child abuse, pornography, and abortion.

The magazine’s history has been marked by political polarization. Schwarzer has faced criticism for her stances on the war in Ukraine and her views on transgender identity, which she noted led to subscription cancellations by some readers.

To mark the conclusion, the final issue will be a double-sized special edition reviewing the 50 most important topics in the magazine's history. The ‘Emma’ archive is slated to be incorporated into the German Literary Archive Marbach, making it available to researchers by 2029.
