Closure of Emma feminist magazine

Overview

Alice Schwarzer, a prominent German feminist, has announced that her magazine ‘Emma’ will cease publication after 50 years. The final issue is scheduled for release on December 8, 2026.

Schwarzer indicated that the decision is not due to financial necessity, as revenues currently cover expenses and reserves exist. Instead, she cited a sense of exhaustion, stating, ‘We are going because we feel: It is enough!’

Founded in 1977 to provide a female counterweight to ‘male media,’ the magazine has covered topics ranging from abortion rights to sexual violence. While historians note the publication was crucial to the German women’s movement, its legacy is marked by political polarization. Schwarzer has faced criticism from younger feminists regarding her stances on gender identity and transgender issues, which she noted contributed to subscription cancellations.
