Aliko Dangote expands African petroleum network
Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is significantly expanding his group’s energy footprint across Africa through major infrastructure investments and a large-scale refinery IPO. At the Financial Times Africa Summit in London, Dangote confirmed his company acquired a 24.76% stake in the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) via a KSh42.5 billion block trade. This acquisition, which made him the largest private shareholder in KPC, has already driven a nearly 19% increase in KPC’s share price on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
To support his regional strategy, Dangote plans to invest an additional $1.5 billion to expand KPC’s 1,300-kilometer pipeline network. His broader pan-African distribution strategy includes pursuing infrastructure projects in Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Namibia, as well as developing a distribution corridor in Ethiopia linking Djibouti to Addis Ababa.
In Nigeria, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has launched an initial public offering (IPO) seeking to raise approximately $2.1 billion. The IPO, which offers a 3% stake to the public, values the refinery at nearly $49 billion. Proceeds are intended to fund an expansion to double the facility’s capacity from 700,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029.
Overall, the Dangote Group aims to invest approximately $50 billion between 2026 and 2030 to address energy and manufacturing constraints on the continent, emphasizing the urgent need for reliable electricity and stronger local financial institutions.
