The shares were sold by state-backed entities, including the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and the Public Servants Pension Scheme, reducing their combined holdings to below 15%. The deal, which settled at an effective price of Sh9.36 per share, is intended to align with Dangote’s refinery plans in Lamu.

While Ruto defended the sale, noting that KPC’s share price rose by 10% following the investment, critics and opposition leaders, including Ndindi Nyoro, have raised questions regarding the transparency of the transaction and whether state-linked institutions secured adequate returns.
