Dangote Group offers East African nations stake in Kenya refinery
The Dangote Group has offered East African nations a combined 30 percent equity stake in a proposed oil refinery to be located in Lamu, Kenya. According to David Ndii, a senior economic adviser to Kenyan President William Ruto, the total value of the regional equity offering is approximately $1.5 billion.
Kenya has been offered a 10 percent stake, estimated at $500 million, while Ethiopia and Rwanda have expressed interest in participating. The refinery is expected to have a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, which exceeds the current refined fuel demand of East Africa by roughly 250,000 barrels per day. The facility is planned to process crude oil sourced from fields in Kenya and Uganda.
The total investment for the refinery, petrochemical complex, and associated port infrastructure is estimated to be between $16 billion and $20 billion. Groundbreaking for the project is anticipated to occur in September. The project is a key component of the LAPSSET corridor, aimed at enhancing regional energy security and reducing reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
