Dangote Group’s pan-African industrial expansion
Overview
Dangote Group continues its pan-African industrial expansion across energy, petrochemicals, fertilizer, and cement. Recent financial reports for Dangote Cement Plc show a 49% rise in Pan-African EBITDA and a corporate tax charge of N97 billion for the 2020 financial year.
In Tanzania, the group is advancing a $46 billion investment plan through 2030. Following discussions between Aliko Dangote and President Samia Suluhu Hassan, a Tanzanian delegation visited the Lagos refinery to explore expanding the group’s footprint into fertilizer production, energy, and industrial infrastructure. The group already operates an $800 million cement plant in the country.
Regarding energy infrastructure, the group is advancing a proposed $16–$20 billion refinery, petrochemical complex, and port infrastructure project on Kenya’s Lamu Island. This project, a key component of the LAPSSET corridor, is expected to have a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, exceeding East Africa’s current refined fuel demand by roughly 250,000 barrels per day. Dangote has offered East African nations a combined 30% equity stake, valued at approximately $1.5 billion. Kenya has been offered a 10% stake ($500 million), while Ethiopia and Rwanda have expressed interest. Groundbreaking is anticipated for September.
To address logistical inefficiencies and high taxes associated with road transport across West African borders, Dangote Industries Limited plans to acquire a fleet of vessels to transport industrial products like cement to markets in Ghana, Togo, and Ivory Coast via seaborne trade.
Globally, Dangote is exploring outbound African capital flows and a potential $5 billion IPO for the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals plant in Nigeria.
