Allgäu region announces 2026 Viehscheid cattle drive dates

The 2026 schedule for various Viehscheid (cattle drive) events in the Allgäu region of Germany has been established. These traditional festivals mark the return of livestock from alpine pastures to the valleys.

Key scheduled dates include:

• September 11: Schöllang (Oberstdorf district) with approximately 600 animals. • September 16: Nesselwang, featuring about 140 cattle. • September 19: Untermaiselstein (Rettenberg) with roughly 300 animals, and Missen-Wilhams with approximately 400 animals. • September 22: Bolsterlang, involving about 500 young cattle.

While most events feature traditional celebrations, festivities vary by location. For instance, Bolsterlang maintains a more modest approach without a festival tent, whereas Missen-Wilhams includes alphorn players and the tradition of 'Schellenwürfeln' (bell dice rolling).
