In Switzerland’s canton of Fribourg, the Alpabzug (or Désalpe) marks the end of the summer grazing period after herds spend more than four months in the Alps. Organizer Christoph Overney noted that the decorations are part of the ceremony rather than a performance, stating, “No animal is decorated for the visitors.”

In Germany’s Allgäu region and the Tannheimer Tal in Tyrol, the 2026 Viehscheid schedule includes numerous events. September festivities included drives in Bad Hindelang, Balderschwang, Oberstaufen, Schöllang, Oberstdorf, Pfronten, Grän-Haldensee, Jungholz, and Nesselwängle. Other regional dates included Unterjoch and Nesselwang.

Following major September drives in Nesselwang, Haldenwang, and Haslach, the season continues into October. Upcoming events include Memhölz on October 3, featuring a small herd of cattle, goats, and ponies, and the Viehscheid in Apfeltrang on October 4, which involves cattle driven from the Schroffensteinalpe through the village with music and catering. Additionally, the Heimhofen Viehscheid near Grünenbach is scheduled for October 10, 2026. Described as one of the smaller and younger traditional drives in the area, it will involve approximately 60 cattle and is expected to attract over 1,000 spectators for activities such as ‘Schellenwürfeln’ and live music.
