Alliance of Sahel States balances sovereignty with U.S. migration funding

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, is navigating a complex landscape of ideological shifts and economic pragmatism. While the bloc promotes a narrative of sovereignty and a break from colonial-era structures, analysts suggest the current political framework remains deeply influenced by French colonial administrative legacies, now being repurposed through Russian strategic influence.

Despite the AES's stated rupture with Western powers, the alliance is engaging with United States economic interests regarding migration. The U.S. administration has allocated $410 million to support third-party countries in managing migration. For the AES nations, which face significant budgetary constraints and a lack of foreign currency due to sanctions and high military spending, these funds offer critical financial relief. By cooperating on migration control, these regimes are able to secure much-needed capital while maintaining their official anti-Western rhetoric.
