In a move toward political emancipation, AES representatives presented a unified diplomatic doctrine at the UN, emphasizing sovereignty and self-determination while rejecting external interference. This shift included notifying the official withdrawal of their states from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, citing concerns over the “politicization of international justice.”

Furthermore, following their formal withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in early 2025, the AES is engaging in new negotiations to establish a framework for regional relations. These discussions aim to address the movement of people, goods, and services, as well as trade barriers and investment attractiveness. ECOWAS President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has emphasized the importance of maintaining ties with AES members to preserve regional integration gains.
