AES institutional and parliamentary development
Overview
The Confederation of Sahel States (AES), consisting of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, has launched its first parliamentary session in Niamey, Niger. This legislative body is composed of 45 deputies, with 15 representatives from each member state. Under the presidency of Ousmane Bougouma, the parliament aims to transition the alliance from a security-focused pact into a structured political and institutional entity.
To support this transition, three specialized commissions have been established to address Defense and Security, Diplomacy, and Development. The parliamentary agenda includes regional police cooperation, intelligence sharing, the free movement of people and goods, and the economic models and financing of media within the AES space.
In conjunction with these institutional developments, the confederation is expanding its engagement through social and civic initiatives. This includes the Confederation Youth and Volunteerism Forum in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, scheduled for August 28 to 30, which expects to host approximately 1,000 young participants from member states to discuss regional integration. Additionally, biometric identity card enrollment (CIB-AES) has commenced in Arbinda, Burkina Faso, to facilitate easier movement for citizens of the alliance.
