Alliance of Sahel States focus on resource sovereignty in Ouagadougou

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger are working to increase control over their natural resources through the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). This initiative was a central focus of the first Energy, Mines, and Hydrocarbons Week of the AES (SEMH-AES), held alongside the 8th West African Mining Activities Week (SAMAO) in Ouagadougou from September 14 to 19, 2026.

Burkinabè Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo emphasized that the economic benefits of gold, lithium, uranium, iron, and petroleum depend on local transformation, secured production chains, and energy sovereignty. He identified the securing of territories and infrastructure, accelerating local content, and strengthening resource governance as essential conditions for industrialization.

During the event, the mining company IAMGOLD Essakane SA received several awards, including best exhibitor, gold sponsor, and best stand. The company also earned distinctions for environmental and energy management excellence, as well as for female leadership.
