AES Confederation Parliament inaugurates first session in Niamey
The Confederation of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, has officially inaugurated its Confederation Parliament in Niamey, Niger. The session, which began on August 24, 2026, marks a significant step in transitioning the alliance from a primarily security-focused pact into a structured political and institutional entity.
The new legislative body is composed of 45 deputies, with 15 representatives appointed from each of the three member states. The inaugural session is scheduled to run through August 29, 2026, with the agenda including the adoption of internal regulations and the establishment of various parliamentary organs and commissions.
This institutional development follows the establishment of other AES pillars, including a unified military force of approximately 5,000 soldiers and the Confederation Investment and Development Bank (BCID-AES), which launched with an initial capital of 500 billion CFA francs. The session was attended by parliamentary delegations from Togo and Chad, who participated as guests of honor.
The Parliament aims to provide a collective voice for the Sahelian peoples, focusing on shared interests in sovereignty, security, economic development, and diplomacy.
