Allied Democratic Forces attacks in eastern DRC kill dozens, UN imposes sanctions on rebel leaders
In the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) carried out a series of attacks across the Babila‑Babombi chiefdom in the Mambasa territory. Over ten days, twelve incursions were reported in villages such as Njiapanda, Manteite, Bella and others, resulting in at least 39 deaths, the burning of nine motorcycles, the destruction of numerous homes and the disappearance of several children. APDEF coordinator Ram’s Malikidogo warned that the violence had become a humanitarian emergency requiring urgent protection for the population.
Separately, the ADF raided the predominantly Christian commune of Mangina twice between 14 and 16 July, killing more than 20 people, injuring six, and burning houses. The first raid left six dead, including a church elder and a worship leader; the second raid killed ten. Local pastor‑leader efforts to shelter Christians were noted amid growing fear.
Amid the escalating conflict, the United Nations Security Council adopted sanctions on leaders of armed groups operating in eastern DRC, including the Rwandan‑backed M23 rebels and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). The measures, imposed under Chapter VII, comprise asset freezes, travel bans and an arms embargo. The UN said the sanctions aim to curb threats to stability as internal displacement in the region has risen to seven million people.
